PresidentsNotes

Dear Lovely Newcomers!

Hello Spring! Hope you’re enjoying the arrival of milder temps, the return of migratory birds, and the blooms of azaleas in eye-popping colors!

We have tons of stuff happening this month so get in your RSVPs and mark your calendars. Our International Party (SAT May 20) is a perennial favorite because it showcases the diversity of our group. Bring a dish from your culture/heritage and create connections over food!

We are also thankful for new and continuing members opening their homes to host our various activities.

Please enjoy our May events. And as always, we welcome you to email us with questions and suggestions.

Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat
At the age of twelve, Sophie Caco is sent from her impoverished village in Haiti to New York, to be reunited with a mother she barely remembers. There she discovers secrets that no child should ever know, and a legacy of shame that can be healed only when she returns to Haiti–to the women who first reared her. What ensues is a passionate journey through a landscape charged with the supernatural and scarred by political violence, in a novel that bears witness to the traditions, suffering, and wisdom of an entire people.

Restorative Yoga (benefits Cure Sanfilippo Foundation)

THURS May 18 @ 7:00-10:00pm @ Embody Fitness, 18 Adams St., Burlington

Replenish body & soul with a restorative & meditative yoga session followed by wine and snacks—and help a local family too! Embody Fitness owner Anne Rollins is donating this event to help cure 2-year-old Spencer Smith, and others like him, who have Sanfilippo Syndrome, a disease causing children to lose the ability to walk, talk, see, swallow, and remember. Most children do not live past their teens. And there is no cure–yet! But Spencer’s parents, Alli and Nate, have joined with the nonprofit Cure Sanfilippo Foundation to fund research and clinical trials in search of a cure. Attending yoga night is an easy (and relaxing!) way to help!

Schedule: Yoga (7-8:15pm); Refreshments & Raffles (8:15-10pm). Can’t make yoga? Just come for the refreshments!

Cost: Suggest minimum donation $30 (includes several raffle tickets)

Register: email Anne by May 5 at anne@embodyfitness.net and specify whether you are attending Yoga (at 7pm) or just stopping by for the refreshments/raffles (at 8:15pm). Please bring a mat if you have one.

Lunch Bunch

FRI May 19 @ 12:00pm @ Cafe Barada, 2269 Mass Ave., Cambridge (near Davis Sq. T-stop)
Cafe Barada is a family run restaurant serving the Boston and Cambridge area with Lebanese food, wine and cocktails. Specialties include hummus, falafel and pita wraps. Note: NO CREDIT CARDS. Cash ONLY.

Bunco! (& Left-Right-Center)

TUES May 23, 7:30pm (schmoozing begins); 8:15pm (gameplay begins)
Bring: $5 ante for Bunco; $3 for L-R-C (exact change appreciated!); and a beverage or snack to share.
RSVP: email pampardoe@gmail.com for location details.

About the Games: Bunco is an entertaining, simple dice game, with no experience required. It’s played in multiple rounds with players alternating turns rolling the dice to match the target number. Whoever wins the most rounds is the overall winner. And because players rotate tables, it is a great way to meet and chat with different people. Left-Right-Center is an even simpler game, faster moving than Bunco, and is played at the end of the evening. Did we mention there’s no experience required?
