The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
In this gripping debut novel, a secret threatens to expose everyone at a thriving Virginia plantation in the decades before the Civil War. Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, Lavinia is placed there as an indentured servant under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food, while guided by the love of her new family. In time, Lavinia is accepted at the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. Grissom’s novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds.

Bring: $5 ante for Bunco; $3 for L-R-C (exact change appreciated!); and a beverage or snack to share.
RSVP: email kessacoleman@gmail.com for location details.
About the Games:
Bunco is an entertaining, simple dice game, with no experience required. It’s played in multiple rounds with players alternating turns rolling the dice to match the target number. Whoever wins the most rounds is the overall winner. And because players rotate tables, it is a great way to meet and chat with different people. Left-Right-Center is an even simpler game, faster moving than Bunco, and is played at the end of the evening. Did we mention there’s no experience required?
Help Wanted!
If you have a little extra time and you enjoy some camaraderie, there are
several ways to get involved, both short- and longer-term.
Other ways to get involved: ▪ host a coffee ▪ update our website with the latest happenings ▪ host a Bunco or Book Club evening ▪ host or organize a cookbook party ▪ update seasonal “stuff-to-do-in-the-area” flyer ▪ have another idea? let us know! ▪
Email asmithziegler@gmail.com to inquire.
We have immediate openings in two of our regular positions:
Membership Chair: Ongoing, track new memberships, deposit dues payments, field membership inquiries. This is mainly an at-home position.
Lunch Bunch Host: Once per month, select restaurant and make reservation, collect member RSVPs, attend lunch. This would be a perfect job to share with another person!
Thank-you DEC hosts:
Natalie Auer for hosting Coffee Talk!
Colleen & Robert Calhoun for hosting our holiday party!

Sheila Tweeddale for hosting Book Club!
