March 2023 Newsletter

Hello Neighbors & Newcomers,

Depending on the day, it feels like we may be seeing signs of spring or plunging deeper into the snow and cold winter temperatures. Either way, we have some great activities to allow you to either hide from or take advantage of the weather, depending on which option is more to your liking!

We will also have some board positions available for next season, so please reach out via email if you’re interested in getting more involved. We have a ton of fun as a board and would love to have others join us, whether you’re looking for a larger position or just looking for a small opportunity to get your feet wet. Send us an email, and we’d be happy to discuss it further.

You can also always check the Lexington Neighbors & Newcomers Members Facebook group and our Instagram to get the latest updates on our activities.

Best Wishes,
Tania Bojanowski, LNN President & Rachel Brownell, LNN Secretary

The weather will be mild so don’t overdress. There is a rental facility on site if you don’t have gear. Looking forward to seeing you and enjoying the snow!

Book Club

Thursday, March 16 @ 7pm

Join our Book Club group on Thursday, March 16th, to review “The Dictionary of Lost Words” by Pip Williams.

In 1901, the word ‘Bondmaid’ was discovered missing from the Oxford English Dictionary. This is the story of the girl who stole it.

Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the ‘Scriptorium’, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word ‘bondmaid’ flutters to the floor. Esme rescues the slip and stashes it in an old wooden case that belongs to her friend, Lizzie, a young servant in the big house. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men. They help her make sense of the world.

Over time, Esme realises that some words are considered more important than others, and that words and meanings relating to women’s experiences often go unrecorded. While she dedicates her life to the Oxford English Dictionary, secretly, she begins to collect words for another dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words.

Set when the women’s suffrage movement was at its height and the Great War loomed, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. It’s a delightful, lyrical and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words, and the power of language to shape the world and our experience of it.

Book Club

Thursday, February 16 @ 7pm

Join our Book Club group on Thursday, February 16th, to review “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd.

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world.

Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.

Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented.

RSVP by February 15th to lexnnbookclub@gmail.com. On the morning of February 16th, we will email the time of the meeting and the address of our host to all attendees. Please bring a drink of your choice and/or snacks to share.

Book Club
Thursday, January 19 at 7pm

Happy New Year! Let’s get together on Thursday, January 19th, 2023  to talk about our Book Club selection, “Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee.

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant — and that her lover is married — she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son’s powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.

Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan’s finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters — strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis — survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

Now also a beautifully produced Apple+ TV series.

RSVP by January 18th to lexnnbookclub@gmail.com. On the morning of January 19th,  we will email the time of the meeting and the address of our host to all attendees.  Please bring a drink of your choice and/or snacks to share.

  • Looking to get more involved??

We organize many recurring events like Book Club, Ladies’ Nights, Walking Groups, and more, but we would love to offer new, one-off events to our members too.

We realize that committing to a year round volunteer role may be too much for some, but organizing a one-off event might be something you’d like! We are a volunteer-run organization, and we welcome your help.

Is there a type of event you would really enjoy this year? Something that you love to do or a new activity that you have been looking for others to try with you? Perhaps it is a trip to a museum, concert, evening of dancing, cocktail workshop.

We have a playbook to help you get started and of course are available to answer any questions to make organizing as easy as possible.

If you are interested, please reach out to events.lexingtonnewcomers@gmail.com.
