Dear Lovely Newcomers!

For those of you who were vacationing during school break last week, we hope you had a wonderful and restful break.

We are chock-full of activities this month due, in large measure, to several members who recently joined our board organizing new and creative events. For a complete list of who we are and what we do, see the yellow sidebar The LNC Board: Who We Are? later in this newsletter.

We are also thankful for new and continuing members opening their homes to host our various activities. Thank you all!

Please enjoy our March events. And as always, we welcome you to email us with questions and suggestions.

Underground Airlines by Ben Winters
It is the present-day, and the world is as we know it: smartphones, social networking and Happy Meals. Save for one thing: the Civil War never occurred. A gifted young black man calling himself Victor has struck a bargain with federal law enforcement, working as a bounty hunter for the US Marshall Service. He’s got plenty of work. In this version of America, slavery continues in four states called “the Hard Four.” On the trail of a runaway known as Jackdaw, Victor arrives in Indianapolis knowing that something isn’t right–with the case file, with his work, and with the country itself. .

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
In this gripping debut novel, a secret threatens to expose everyone at a thriving Virginia plantation in the decades before the Civil War. Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, Lavinia is placed there as an indentured servant under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food, while guided by the love of her new family. In time, Lavinia is accepted at the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. Grissom’s novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds.

PresidentsNotes

What is Lexington Newcomers? The question came up at our last board meeting—and we unanimously agreed that it’s more than the name implies. LNC is for any resident with new circumstances, not just a new home. So please pass the word that even if you’re a long-time resident, if you are experiencing a life change involving a child, a partner, a job, or a home, we’d like to offer our friendship and support.

We are excited to start the season and we are planning some new events we hope you enjoy! Please always feel free to email us with questions and suggestions.
